Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Resigns Amid Investigation Into Academic Credentials

Professor Jason Arday has resigned from the University of Cambridge and Jesus College with immediate effect following growing scrutiny of his academic credentials and allegations of plagiarism.

Arday, who became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history when he was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education in 2023, announced his decision in a resignation letter published on Wednesday.

His departure came shortly after Cambridge confirmed that it had opened an investigation following the receipt of new information concerning his academic qualifications and honorary appointments. Jesus College also initiated a separate review into some of the issues raised.

In his resignation letter, Arday said the continuing accusations, speculation and public attention had taken a serious toll on him and his family.

He explained that his decision should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing or a rejection of academic values. According to him, the personal cost of the controversy had become too great, making it necessary for him to step away from his position.

Arday also expressed gratitude to his students, colleagues and supporters, while indicating that he hopes to return to academic work in the future.

The controversy centres partly on allegations that sections of his 2015 doctoral thesis and some published academic work contained material resembling earlier research by other scholars.

Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, previously examined plagiarism complaints against him but did not uphold the allegations. The institution reportedly attributed the identified issues to what it described as an honest and reasonable error.

Arday has consistently denied deliberately plagiarising other researchers or misrepresenting his academic record. He previously said that problems identified in his doctoral work resulted from inadequate supervision and guidance rather than intentional misconduct.

Questions have also been raised about some visiting professorships, honorary appointments and personal accomplishments attributed to him. Cambridge has not publicly disclosed the full details of the new information that prompted its latest investigation.

The university said the inquiry would be conducted thoroughly and in accordance with its policies and employment law. It added that separate complaints relating to alleged academic misconduct were also being handled under its research misconduct procedures.

Before the controversy, Arday received international recognition for his journey into academia. He has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with autism as a child, not speaking until the age of 11 and learning to read and write during his late teenage years.

He later built an academic career focused on race, inequality and education before joining Cambridge at the age of 37.

The case has generated wider debate across British higher education about academic integrity, institutional oversight and the verification of scholarly credentials.

Cambridge has not announced when its investigations will be completed. Arday maintains that the allegations should not erase his academic accomplishments or the personal journey that brought him into higher education.

FIFA Apologises Over Handling of Cancelled World Cup Commercial Rights Proposal

0

FIFA has issued a major apology over administrative and communication failures surrounding its now-cancelled proposal to sell a minority stake in the commercial rights connected to the FIFA World Cup.

The world football governing body acknowledged the errors following a meeting at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. The discussions came amid widespread opposition to the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative from football associations, confederations and other stakeholders.

The proposal, which was reportedly discussed during a FIFA summit in Rabat, Morocco, would have allowed investors to acquire a minority stake in FIFA’s commercial arm. This arrangement would have included access to a portion of future World Cup revenues.

However, the initiative faced strong resistance from UEFA and several national football associations. Critics warned that allowing private investors to hold an interest in FIFA’s commercial operations could threaten the long-term independence and integrity of the World Cup.

In a letter addressed to FIFA’s 211 member associations, President Gianni Infantino acknowledged weaknesses in the consultation process. He admitted that the organisation made mistakes concerning the timing of the proposal and the manner in which it was communicated to stakeholders.

Infantino expressed regret over the controversy and promised that FIFA would adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach to future decision-making.

Despite growing criticism from some football leaders, FIFA officials reportedly reaffirmed their confidence in Infantino. They maintained that he would remain president while the organisation reviews its governance, consultation and communication procedures.

FIFA authorities also agreed on the need to strengthen engagement with member associations before introducing major commercial or administrative proposals.

Some European football officials had reportedly considered mounting coordinated opposition if the investment plan proceeded. Although the proposal has now been withdrawn, the controversy has intensified scrutiny of FIFA’s governance ahead of its next presidential election.

UEFA officials have continued to demand broader reforms within the organisation. However, they have reportedly acknowledged the difficulty of identifying a widely accepted candidate capable of challenging Infantino for the presidency.

FIFA reaffirmed its commitment to developing and expanding football programmes worldwide. The organisation said it hopes the lessons learned from the failed proposal will help strengthen its governance structure and improve relations with football stakeholders.

Tinubu Hails NELFUND Over Expansion of Interest-Free Student Loan Programme

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for its efforts in expanding access to tertiary education through the Federal Government’s interest-free student loan programme.

The President gave the commendation during a meeting with NELFUND Chairman, Jim Ovia, and the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Akintunde Sawyerr, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu described the student loan initiative as an important part of his administration’s education reform agenda, noting that it is helping to reduce the financial burden that has prevented many qualified Nigerian students from pursuing higher education.

He also acknowledged the leadership of NELFUND for driving the implementation of the programme, with special recognition given to the agency’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, for overseeing the rollout of the scheme across the country.

According to figures presented by NELFUND, the agency has disbursed more than ₦303 billion under the student loan programme, with over 1.64 million Nigerian students benefiting from the initiative nationwide.

The interest-free loans are designed to cover tuition fees and other approved educational expenses, providing financial support to eligible students without the burden of interest charges.

The student loan scheme is one of the key education initiatives under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve access to higher education, promote human capital development and ease the financial challenges faced by students and their families.

The Presidency said the progress recorded by the programme demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to investing in education and creating more opportunities for young Nigerians to complete their studies.

Government officials also expressed confidence that the continued implementation of the initiative will encourage greater enrolment in tertiary institutions, strengthen educational outcomes and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term economic growth by producing a more skilled and educated workforce.

Edo Government Spokesman Criticizes Adeleke’s Public Style as Osun Campaigns Intensify

The Edo State Government has taken a swipe at Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, over his well-known public dancing style as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

Speaking during a campaign event organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Government, Mr. Sunday Oshobi, criticized Governor Adeleke’s approach to leadership, arguing that the governor has placed more public attention on dancing than on governance during his time in office.

According to Oshobi, Osun State requires focused leadership capable of addressing the challenges confronting the state. He claimed that Governor Adeleke’s frequent dance displays at public functions have overshadowed his administrative responsibilities.

He was quoted as saying that for the past four years, Adeleke has often been seen dancing before attending to official duties, suggesting that the governor’s style does not reflect the seriousness expected of someone occupying such an important office.

Governor Adeleke’s energetic dance performances have remained one of the defining features of his public appearances since assuming office. While many of his supporters describe the dancing as a natural expression of his personality and a way of connecting with ordinary citizens, critics have repeatedly questioned whether such displays project the image of leadership expected from a state governor.

Osun Governor Adeleke

The Osun governor has consistently rejected those criticisms. On several occasions, Adeleke has maintained that his love for dancing has never interfered with his official responsibilities or the administration of the state.

He has also insisted that dancing is part of his personality and does not diminish his commitment to governance. The governor has repeatedly stated that he will not stop dancing simply because of political criticism, emphasizing that his performance in office should be judged by his administration’s policies and achievements rather than his personal style.

The latest remarks from the Edo State Government come as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Political parties have continued to exchange criticisms while presenting their respective candidates and agendas to voters in what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s closely watched off-cycle governorship contests.

As campaigns continue across the state, political observers expect both major parties to increase their engagement with the electorate while focusing on issues they believe will influence voters before election day.

Osun Government Plans Legal Action Over EFCC Account Restriction

The Osun State Government has announced plans to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in court following the restriction placed on one of the state’s bank accounts.

Governor Ademola Adeleke said the state’s legal team had been directed to approach the Federal High Court in Osogbo to contest the action. He maintained that the restriction was imposed without proper judicial authorisation and could disrupt government operations.

The affected account, domiciled with First Bank, was reportedly placed under a Post No Debit restriction, preventing withdrawals and outgoing transactions. The account is said to support official financial obligations, including payments connected to government operations.

Osun Government Plans Legal Action Over EFCC Account Restriction

Adeleke described the development as an infringement on the constitutional rights of the state government. He called on the EFCC to disclose the legal basis for its action and provide details of the investigation that prompted the restriction.

The governor also alleged that the timing of the action, shortly before the August 15 governorship election, raised concerns about possible political interference. This allegation has not been independently established.

The EFCC has, however, confirmed restricting the account. According to the commission, the action followed an ongoing investigation into the alleged handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee amounting to about N11 billion.

The anti-graft agency said investigators noticed substantial transfers from state government accounts to several corporate entities and imposed the restriction to prevent further movement of the funds while investigations continued.

The commission denied acting for political reasons, stating that its intervention was part of its responsibility to protect public funds. It also disclosed that some Osun State officials, including the Accountant-General, had been questioned in connection with the investigation.

Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, disputed the legality of the restriction and said the court would be asked to determine whether the EFCC followed the required legal process.

No court has made a final determination on the allegations or the legality of the account restriction. The investigation remains ongoing, and no finding of wrongdoing has been made against the state government or any official mentioned in connection with the matter.

WAEC Withholds Results of Candidates in Indebted States Over Unpaid Examination Fees

LAGOS, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of candidates sponsored by state governments that are yet to pay outstanding examination fees, preventing affected students from accessing their 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office explained that while the examination results had been released, candidates from indebted states would not be able to check their results until the respective state governments cleared their financial obligations to the examination body.

WAEC appealed to the affected state governments to settle the outstanding debts promptly to prevent students from suffering unnecessary delays in accessing their academic records.

The council stressed that the measure is intended to recover outstanding examination fees owed by state governments and urged authorities to prioritize the welfare and future of the affected candidates.

Education stakeholders have expressed concern that the delay could affect students seeking admission into tertiary institutions and those applying for scholarships or employment opportunities requiring their O’Level results.

WAEC advised affected candidates to contact their respective state education authorities for updates while awaiting payment of the outstanding debts.

EFCC Reportedly Freezes Osun Government Account 10 Days to Governorship Election

OSOGBO, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly frozen a bank account belonging to the Osun State Government, just 10 days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15.

The affected account, domiciled with First Bank, was placed on a “Post No Debit” restriction, according to documents cited by several media reports. The account is said to be one of the state government’s salary accounts, a development that could affect the payment of workers and other government financial operations.

The development comes hours after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, alleged that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the state’s accounts and those of senior government officials ahead of the governorship election.

Governor Adeleke described the alleged move as unlawful and politically motivated, warning that it could disrupt governance and the delivery of essential public services during the election period.

However, reports indicate that the EFCC’s directive to First Bank stated that the restriction forms part of the commission’s ongoing investigation and was issued pursuant to relevant provisions of the EFCC Act and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued a separate public statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the account restriction, while the Osun State Government has announced plans to challenge the action in court.

The development has heightened political tension in Osun State as residents prepare to elect a governor on August 15.

ASABA — Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have dismantled parts of a suspected armed robbery network, recovering three pump-action guns and three suspected stolen motorcycles while arresting five suspects in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.

The command said the arrests were made during coordinated operations aimed at curbing violent crime and enhancing public safety across Delta State.

In a statement issued on Monday and made available to journalists in Warri, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed that operatives of the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, on July 27, 2026, intercepted one Joseph Tyavzua during a stop-and-search operation along the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway.

According to the statement, the suspect was found in possession of a pump-action gun while attempting to enter Onitsha on a commercial motorcycle.

Edafe said the suspect claimed to be a member of a vigilante group but failed to provide any lawful authorization for possessing the firearm.

“The exhibit was recovered, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue,” the statement said.
In a separate operation on the same day, officers attached to the Ekpan Division acted on a report of an armed robbery involving a commercial motorcycle rider along Jakpa Road, Effurun.

The investigation led to the arrest of two principal suspects, Edodo Gift (41) and Emoefe Solomon (27), who allegedly confessed to the robbery.

The suspects subsequently led detectives to two suspected receivers, Fodio Bello (27) and Kabiru Mohammed (25), at Otowhe, near Oleh.

The operation resulted in the recovery of two additional pump-action guns and three motorcycles believed to have been stolen during robbery operations.

Police said all four suspects are in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the suspected criminal syndicate.

Commending the officers for the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and the sustained crackdown on violent criminals across the state.

He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property throughout Delta State.
