Professor Jason Arday has resigned from the University of Cambridge and Jesus College with immediate effect following growing scrutiny of his academic credentials and allegations of plagiarism.
Arday, who became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history when he was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education in 2023, announced his decision in a resignation letter published on Wednesday.
His departure came shortly after Cambridge confirmed that it had opened an investigation following the receipt of new information concerning his academic qualifications and honorary appointments. Jesus College also initiated a separate review into some of the issues raised.
In his resignation letter, Arday said the continuing accusations, speculation and public attention had taken a serious toll on him and his family.
He explained that his decision should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing or a rejection of academic values. According to him, the personal cost of the controversy had become too great, making it necessary for him to step away from his position.
Arday also expressed gratitude to his students, colleagues and supporters, while indicating that he hopes to return to academic work in the future.
The controversy centres partly on allegations that sections of his 2015 doctoral thesis and some published academic work contained material resembling earlier research by other scholars.
Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, previously examined plagiarism complaints against him but did not uphold the allegations. The institution reportedly attributed the identified issues to what it described as an honest and reasonable error.
Arday has consistently denied deliberately plagiarising other researchers or misrepresenting his academic record. He previously said that problems identified in his doctoral work resulted from inadequate supervision and guidance rather than intentional misconduct.
Questions have also been raised about some visiting professorships, honorary appointments and personal accomplishments attributed to him. Cambridge has not publicly disclosed the full details of the new information that prompted its latest investigation.
The university said the inquiry would be conducted thoroughly and in accordance with its policies and employment law. It added that separate complaints relating to alleged academic misconduct were also being handled under its research misconduct procedures.
Before the controversy, Arday received international recognition for his journey into academia. He has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with autism as a child, not speaking until the age of 11 and learning to read and write during his late teenage years.
He later built an academic career focused on race, inequality and education before joining Cambridge at the age of 37.
The case has generated wider debate across British higher education about academic integrity, institutional oversight and the verification of scholarly credentials.
Cambridge has not announced when its investigations will be completed. Arday maintains that the allegations should not erase his academic accomplishments or the personal journey that brought him into higher education.
