FIFA has issued a major apology over administrative and communication failures surrounding its now-cancelled proposal to sell a minority stake in the commercial rights connected to the FIFA World Cup.
The world football governing body acknowledged the errors following a meeting at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. The discussions came amid widespread opposition to the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative from football associations, confederations and other stakeholders.
The proposal, which was reportedly discussed during a FIFA summit in Rabat, Morocco, would have allowed investors to acquire a minority stake in FIFA’s commercial arm. This arrangement would have included access to a portion of future World Cup revenues.
However, the initiative faced strong resistance from UEFA and several national football associations. Critics warned that allowing private investors to hold an interest in FIFA’s commercial operations could threaten the long-term independence and integrity of the World Cup.
In a letter addressed to FIFA’s 211 member associations, President Gianni Infantino acknowledged weaknesses in the consultation process. He admitted that the organisation made mistakes concerning the timing of the proposal and the manner in which it was communicated to stakeholders.
Infantino expressed regret over the controversy and promised that FIFA would adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach to future decision-making.
Despite growing criticism from some football leaders, FIFA officials reportedly reaffirmed their confidence in Infantino. They maintained that he would remain president while the organisation reviews its governance, consultation and communication procedures.
FIFA authorities also agreed on the need to strengthen engagement with member associations before introducing major commercial or administrative proposals.
Some European football officials had reportedly considered mounting coordinated opposition if the investment plan proceeded. Although the proposal has now been withdrawn, the controversy has intensified scrutiny of FIFA’s governance ahead of its next presidential election.
UEFA officials have continued to demand broader reforms within the organisation. However, they have reportedly acknowledged the difficulty of identifying a widely accepted candidate capable of challenging Infantino for the presidency.
FIFA reaffirmed its commitment to developing and expanding football programmes worldwide. The organisation said it hopes the lessons learned from the failed proposal will help strengthen its governance structure and improve relations with football stakeholders.
