Ex-SUG President Etimbuk Daniel Dies at NYSC Camp as NANS Demands Probe Over Alleged Fake Drugs

ENUGU — The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, has reportedly died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, amid allegations of counterfeit medication and delayed access to medical care.

The circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death have sparked concerns within the Nigerian student community, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) calling for a thorough investigation to establish what led to the tragedy.

According to reports, the development was disclosed by NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, in a statement issued on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

How the Incident Allegedly Happened

Afeez said Daniel reportedly complained of a headache while participating in the NYSC orientation programme and was subsequently given medication.

However, his condition allegedly deteriorated after taking the drugs, prompting him to request further medical attention at a hospital outside the camp.

According to the account provided by the NANS president, approval for his transfer was allegedly delayed, and Daniel died before he could receive further treatment at the hospital.

Afeez also claimed that NANS received information that a doctor subsequently identified the medication administered to Daniel as fake.

The allegation has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the treatment Daniel received and the procedures for handling medical emergencies at NYSC orientation camps.

However, the authenticity of the medication and its possible connection to Daniel’s death have not been independently established in publicly available reports.

NANS Calls for Thorough Investigation

Reacting to the incident, the NANS president described Daniel’s death as a painful loss to the Nigerian student community and called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The student body is seeking clarity on the medication administered to the deceased, the reported delay in transferring him to a hospital and the overall handling of the medical emergency.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the need for reliable medicines, effective medical supervision and prompt access to emergency healthcare for corps members undergoing orientation.

Questions Remain Unanswered

As of the time of reporting, publicly available accounts had not established the precise medical cause of Daniel’s death or independently confirmed that counterfeit medication contributed to the incident.

An official investigation would be necessary to determine the sequence of events, verify the medication involved and establish whether any failures occurred in the provision of medical care.

The NYSC authorities’ account of the incident and any findings from an official investigation would be important in clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death.

Daniel’s death has left members of the student community mourning, while calls for answers and accountability continue.

Guide Express will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more verified information becomes available.
